DHEA is an endogenous (made in the human body) hormone secreted by the adrenal gland. It serves as precursor to male and female sex hormones (androgens and estrogens). DHEA levels in the body peak at the age of 20 for both men and women. As the level of DHEA decreases, age-related illnesses increase. These include obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, senility, Parkinson’s disease, and osteoporosis. Studies show men and women over the age of 40 have decreased DHEA levels.

DHEA has been helpful in the treatment of cancer, Alzheimer’s, Multiple sclerosis, memory loss, Parkinson’s disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Anti-Aging: A 12 year study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1986 showed that increases in DHEA levels corresponded with a 36% reduction in mortality rates.
Memory Retention: Studies have shown that increasing DHEA in elderly patients improves memory function.
Weight Loss: DHEA increases the body’s ability to transform food into energy. It not only burns off excess fat, but may also prevent fat from accumulating in the first place. DHEA may help reduce abdominal fat that increases with age and is associated with insulin resistance and atherosclerosis, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in July, 2008. At the study’s conclusion, participants who received DHEA had experienced significant losses in visceral and subcutaneous fat. Women who received DHEA lost an average of 10.2% of their visceral fat, while men lost an average of 7.4%. Those who received a placebo gained small amounts of both types of fat.
