5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a precursor to serotonin. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that tells your brain that you are satisfied and do not need to eat more. Serotonin deficiency contributes to weight gain, depression, sleeplessness, anxiety, inflammation, and joint pain, among other symptoms. 5-HTP can help reduce appetite while it enhances your mood, and increases energy levels.
5-HTP has also been extensively researched for the treatment of depression and anxiety. 5-HTP's natural relief for depression and related problems also comes without side effects or pharmaceutical alternatives.
WEIGHT LOSS is another benefit of taking 5-HTP. A well-controlled trial used 5-HTP in obese individuals allowed to eattheir usual diet for the first 6 weeks and a prescribed for the following 7-12 weeks. Researchers found a significant weight loss in the 5-HTP group.
5-HTP is very safe, but if you are taking MAO inhibitors, SSEIs (Prozac, Luvox, Paxil, Effexor, Zoloft) and/or the tricyclic antidepressants (Elavil, Tofranil, Pamelor), do not take 5-HTP without discussing it with your healthcare provider.
